Looking for things to do in Canet de Mar? Start with two pleasures that belong together: discovering Catalan Modernisme and spending time by the Mediterranean. Add a visit to Santa Florentina Castle and you have the beginnings of a memorable stay on the Maresme coast.

This guide brings together places to visit and our suggestions for fitting them into a day or a weekend. The itineraries are our own proposals; access to interiors depends on each venue’s opening dates and booking arrangements.

01 / ARCHITECTURE WORTH A CLOSER LOOK

A Modernisme walk through Canet de Mar

The name you will encounter throughout the walk is Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Family connections and long stays in Canet help explain the presence of the Casa Museu, the Ateneu and Casa Roura. This is a chance to discover the architect of Barcelona’s Palau de la Música Catalana on a more intimate scale.Domènech and Canet · Town Council

Casa Museu Lluís Domènech i Montaner

Begin at the Casa Museu, where Riera Buscarons meets Riera Gavarra. Its rooms introduce the architect’s life and work before you go out to recognise his buildings around town. The museum also publishes guided walks and activities; check what is available for your dates.Casa Museu visits and programme

Casa Roura: brick, ceramics and imagination

At Riera Sant Domènec, 1, Casa Roura is an essential stop. Domènech designed it for Francesca Roura and Jacint de Capmany, and construction finished in 1892. Look at the combination of brick, iron and ceramics. Enjoy the façade without assuming that the interior will be open.Casa Roura · Official heritage information

Ateneu Canetenc: look for the dragon

At the junction of Carrer Ample and Riera Sant Domènec, the Ateneu makes a good stop for detail spotting: the rose window, decorative plasterwork, corner dome and wrought-iron dragon. Built in 1884–1885, it was among Domènech’s early commissions in Canet.Ateneu Canetenc · Town Council

A way to enjoy the walk

First take in each façade, then return to a single detail: a railing, a window or a piece of ceramic decoration. Extend your route with the official audio-guided walk.

02 / A CASTLE ON SCREEN

Santa Florentina Castle and Game of Thrones

Castell de Santa Florentina brings another layer to Canet’s heritage. Its appearance combines the history of an old fortified house with Domènech i Montaner’s renovation and extension. Stained glass, carved wood, mosaics and decorative arts make it part of the Modernisme story as well as a castle visit.History of Santa Florentina · Town Council

The Tarly family home in season six

Scenes from Game of Thrones were filmed here. The castle became Horn Hill, the Tarly family home, in season six, episode six, Blood of My Blood. Barcelona Provincial Council includes the location in its guide to filming sites. The filming location · Barcelona és molt més

The television connection is a reason to visit, but you do not need to have watched the series to appreciate the building’s architecture and history.

Planning your castle visit

Check the visit options and buy tickets through the official Santa Florentina website. Spaces are limited and private events can affect opening dates. Choose your visit slot before arranging the rest of the day.

The entrance is at Av. Doctor Marià Serra, s/n, in the upper part of Canet. Allow time to get there from the coast. If step-free access matters for your group, read the castle’s accessibility information: the route includes slopes and stairs.

03 / THE MEDITERRANEAN AT YOUR PACE

Canet de Mar beaches and the seafront

Platja de Canet and Platja del Cavaió are natural companions to a cultural escape. The Town Council describes both as flat beaches that can be reached on foot or by bicycle. Check the municipal information for services and beach conditions before planning a day by the water.Canet and Cavaió beaches · Canet Tourism

After a morning among Modernista buildings, change pace: take a walk, sit facing the horizon or return to the apartment for a rest. Adapt beach plans to the weather and sea conditions, especially when travelling with children.

Around the Misericòrdia sanctuary

The Santuari de la Misericòrdia takes you beyond the town centre. The different buildings have different authors: the nineteenth-century sanctuary is by Francesc Daniel Molina, while the park and the Restaurant del Santuari are linked to Josep Puig i Cadafalch. Together, they reveal another side of Canet’s architectural heritage.Buildings and monuments · Town Council

Vil·la Flora

With more time, add Vil·la Flora at Via Cannetum, 4. Eduard Ferrés i Puig designed this summer house for Ramiro Busquets, and work finished in 1925. Its ironwork and decorative details continue the theme of your Modernisme walk. It now houses municipal departments, so check access before planning an interior visit.Vil·la Flora · Official visitor information

05 / OUR SUGGESTED ITINERARY

One day or a weekend in Canet de Mar

Use these ideas as a starting point, adjusting the order to your castle booking, museum opening times and the pace of your group.

IF YOU HAVE ONE DAY

Culture and a pause by the sea

  1. Morning: visit the Casa Museu and walk past the Ateneu and Casa Roura. If the castle is your priority, start with your reserved Santa Florentina slot instead.
  2. Lunchtime: leave enough time for a relaxed meal rather than rushing between visits.
  3. Afternoon: walk along the seafront or enjoy the beach if conditions suit. If you chose the castle earlier, add the town-centre façades afterwards.

IF YOU STAY TWO DAYS

A weekend without the rush

  1. Day one: spend the morning discovering Modernista Canet, then leave the afternoon for the sea and some free time.
  2. Day two: visit Santa Florentina with a reservation. Add the Misericòrdia area or Vil·la Flora if opening times and your energy allow.
  3. Between visits: return to the apartment to rest before deciding on your next outing.

06 / BEFORE YOU SET OFF

Practical tips for your stay

  • Tickets and opening times. Check the Casa Museu and the castle separately. A special event can change a venue’s usual schedule.
  • Arriving by train. Canet de Mar station is on the Rodalies R1 line, as noted in the castle’s official travel information. Check the service for your travel day rather than relying on a fixed journey time.
  • Footwear and pace. Allow breaks. The centre, the seafront and the castle entrance are separate parts of the visit.
  • With children. Alternate shorter cultural visits with time outdoors. Check the recommended ages for each castle visit option.
  • If it rains. Choose an indoor visit with confirmed opening times and save the beach for another moment.
